Empress Maria Theresia decrees that in the “Lande unter der Enns” (todays lower Austria) Viennese weights and measures have to be used (“Maßpatent”).

1777

Empress Maria Theresia proclaims the “Zimentierungspatent” (law on legal metrology): the general obligation to verify and re-verify each second year length measures, weights and scales  is established.

1872

Emperor Francis Joseph I proclaims the “Maß- und Gewichtsordnung“ (law on measures and weights): implementation of the Metric System and establishment of the “Normal-Eichungs-Kommission” (NEK, standard verification commission). 

1875

Foundation of the Metre Convention (base of the metric system of units, today SI): Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy is signatory state.

1876

Only metric weights and measures are permitted in Austria.

1907

Establishment of the Physico-technical Testing Service

1923

The NEK is abolished, foundation of the Bundesamtes für Eich- und Vermessungswesen (Federal Office of Metrology and Surveying).

1950

The Metrology Act (MEG), Federal Gazette (BGBl.) No. 152 of 5 July 1950 becomes the foundation of today´s metrology service.

1955

Foundation of the “ Organisation Internationale de Métrologie Légale” (OIML) (international organisation for legal metrology). Austria is a signatory state. Aim of the OIML is the global harmonisation of legal metrology procedures.

1987

Signing the Memorandum of Understanding of EUROMET, the European organisation for the collaboration on measurement standards

1990

Signing the Memorandum of Understanding of WELMEC, the European organisation for legal metrology

1993

Physico-technical Testing Service (PTP) in the BEV becomes a restricted legal entity. The PTP of BEV is responsible for testing and calibrations of measuring instruments, for knowledge transfer as well as expert activities.

1999

Signing the “CIPM MRA”, an arrangement in the frame of the Metre Convention on the mutual recognition for national measurement standards and for calibration and measurement certificates of national metrology institutes

2006

Notification as Notified Body for the Measuring Instruments Directive (MID)

2007

Joining EURAMET e.V. (European Association of National Metrology Institutes), the newly founded regional metrology organisation of Europe
