In the year 2004 the Measuring instruments directive (MID) was adopted within the frame of the European Union. This directive should
reduce barriers to trade and concerns measuring instruments initially being placed on the market or put into service.
The manufacturer
can choose between various conformity assessment procedures. The so called notified bodies take over the state as tester and assessor.
They are responsible for the assessment of products but also for the recognition and supervision of quality management systems and
are notified for these tasks by the national competent authorities.
